New book in the Blue Series: Data and Graphs

Image
A new kid on the block! Math Mammoth Data and Graphs is a worktext that covers common statistical graphs and some related topics for grades 2-5. It is a worktext, which means it includes both the "text" (instruction) and the "work" (exercises and problems). The book starts with the easiest topics: reading and making bar graphs, pictograms, histograms, and various kinds of line graphs .  Toward the end of the book, we also study average (also called the mean) and mode , and how these two concepts relate to line and bar graphs. Lessons on statistics

Image
Is statistics one of your favorite or least favorite topics in math? :) Well... however you feel about it, in middle school students need to learn some beginnings of statistics, such as how to draw a boxplot, a histogram, or a stem-and-leaf plot, learn about statistical distributions, measures of central tendency (mean, median, and mode), measures of variability, and so on. You can now do so with these videos of mine   :^)   or with this Youtube playlist . I hope they are of help!

Math Mammoth Statistics & Probability

Image
Math Mammoth Statistics & Probability is now available -- and it's the last book I'm intending for the Math Mammoth Blue Series . So the Blue Series is now complete! Price: $5.30 (download), $10.30 (printed) This book starts with the easiest topics, such as reading different graphs . These lessons are meant for 5th grade. Some are useful even in earlier grades. Then we study histograms and various kinds of line graphs , including how to draw them. The next section deals with mean, median, and mode —the three measures of central tendency—how to use them, and how these concepts relate to line and bar graphs. To create circle graphs , the student needs to calculate percentages, and it is assumed here that the student has already mastered how to calculate those. The lesson on data analysis presents various types of graphs for students to read, and reviews some other percent-related topics. Then students learn how to make stem-and-leaf plots . Stem-and-leaf plots ...

Mean & mode freebie download

This free lesson about mean and mode will get you a foretaste for my upcoming 5-A Complete Curriculum from the LightBlue Series. Download it here: Mean, Mode, and Bar Graphs - lesson for 5th grade. In the lesson I highlight the idea of mode versus mean (average) and when you can calculate the mean. Students also graph the data in bar graphs. I didn't include the median because elementary lessons on mean, median, and mode tend to concentrate on the calculation aspect only, and I didn't want that. In this lesson they at least get to graph the data and think if mean (average) is "calculable". So I decided to postpone the median till 6th grade... But here are some other lessons on these topics. Even with these you can see how much the actual calculations dominate the lessons. Using and Handling Data Simple explanations for finding mean, median, or mode. www.mathsisfun.com/probability Mode of a Set of Data A very simple and clear lesson with examples and interactive quiz ...

Statistics worksheets

After some delay the Statistics Worksheets Collcetion from the Math Mammoth Green Series is now available. It is priced at $4 for 47 worksheets. The sheets span about five grade levels (from grade 3 to 7); however the majority are for grades 5-7. In this collection, the worksheets are organized by topic (see table of contents ). Within each topic, the difficulty level varies because the sheets have originally been made for different grade levels. Thus the teacher can choose a sheet of right difficulty level, or even assign some students easier sheets and some students more challenging ones, on the same topic. Math Mammoth Statistics Worksheets Collection covers bar graphs, line graphs, circle graphs - both reading and drawing them - data analysis, mean, median, and mode, box-and-whisker plots, stem-and-leaf plots, measures of variation, misleading statistics, data gathering, and a few statistics projects. I hope the problems will fit your needs!

Free scripts to put on your site, plus statistics rant

I got this in the emails today; www.helpingwithmath.com has worksheets and explanations, but above all, you can DOWNLOAD and freely put on your own website (or just on your home computer) all their games, fraction calculator, charts, and worksheets and stuff. On a personal note, I've been diligently working on 6th grade worksheets for a tutoring company. But, I'm also going to make a book to sell with the material, and fairly soon too. So lately I've been just burying myself under statistics and playing with Excel, making charts and graphs and pictures for those worksheets. They're made with Virginia state standards as guidelines, and you know, on 6th grade, the students are supposed to study box-and-whisker plots and stem-and-leaf plots , among the usual stuff such as bar graphs and circle graphs. My husband didn't even know what those were. I first encountered them during my university studies, as I took statistics as a minor. And I really enjoyed studying it, ...
