A homeschooler wins Intel's competition

Just an interesting tidbit... 17-year-old Evan O’Dorney has won the first prize of $100K in The Intel Science Talent Search 2011 competition. He is and has been homeschooled. His entry to the competition had to do with math.
...he compared two ways to estimate the square root of an integer. Evan discovered precisely when the faster way would work. As a byproduct of Evan's research he solved other equations useful for encrypting data.
